Biography
Dr. Bilbao is a Research Assistant Professor with the Department of Pathology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Director of Translation Research in the Department of Pathology. He earned his Ph.D. from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Madrid, Spain) in the area of experimental hematology. He developed his career at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Europe's flagship laboratory for basic research in molecular biology, both in Germany and Italy, where he did his postdoctoral work in the regulation of gene expression and cell division, and eventually became a scientist to establish and direct a facility dedicated to the characterization of mouse models for the study of basic biological processes and mechanisms of disease.
Dr. Bilbao has co-authored more than 40 publications (with more than 3,775 citations) in top-tier scientific journals of different fields including in vivo modeling of cancer, cancer biology, molecular biology and biochemistry, cell biology, immunology, stem cell biology, hemato-oncology, gene expression regulation, nociception, and tissue regeneration. Since his recruitment in 2017, as Director of the Cancer Modeling Shared Resource at Sylvester, Dr. Bilbao’s vision was to create a multidisciplinary translational facility that provided high-quality preclinical data for successful drug development, proof of principle of novel therapy efficacies, and the search for relevant cancer biomarkers. Under his leadership, this unique integrated structure has grown exponentially to provide unique scientific support to cancer researchers by modeling cancer in mice while implementing early discovery of effective antitumor therapies supported by a wide array of state-of-the-art noninvasive imaging technologies and an advanced research histopathology laboratory. -
